20 Years of Deep Bite Treatment with Aligners – What's the Conclusion?
A deep bite is one of the most common malocclusions in the current population. Overall, it is estimated that a deep bite accounts for over 90% of vertical occlusion problems. A deep bite is probably also one of the most difficult malocclusions to treat and maintain. If left untreated, an excessive overbite can have harmful effects on the natural dentition, the surrounding periodontium, and the temporomandibular joint. In addition, functions such as chewing and speaking as well as the aesthetics of the facial profile can be negatively affected. It is well established that fixed multi-bracket appliances have a natural tendency to open the bite. Conversely, practice quickly showed that aligner therapy tends to deepen the bite. Retrospective studies have revealed that tooth corrections in the vertical plane are the most difficult to achieve with aligners. This presentation will demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of aligner orthodontics with respect to deep bites.
